Chapter Six

Cuddling Elizabeth Anne McGraw close to her, Maria sat on her terrace, enjoying every moment she’d spent with the baby today. She’d put Sunny to bed about half an hour ago and brought Elizabeth’s bassinet outside. But she couldn’t resist holding the child and remembering the days when Sunny was that small. It was too beautiful a night to stay indoors, and as she looked up at the sky at the thousands and thousands of stars, she wished for…

It was so deep a wish she wasn’t sure what it was. But she knew it had something to do with Dane. He’d worked at the clinic this morning, but he hadn’t mentioned his plans for the rest of his day off. She told herself it didn’t matter. But it did. She hadn’t seen much of him since Sunday, and she wondered if her family had overwhelmed him.

Attuned to every sound in the silent night, she heard his terrace door open. The moon was almost full, and before she could call to him, he came striding over.

“What’s this?” he asked, looking first at her and then at Allison and Jase’s baby.

“I’m baby-sitting for a friend.”

“Girl or boy?” He looked intrigued in spite of himself.

“This is Elizabeth. She’s seven weeks old. And her mommy and daddy are enjoying a day to themselves for the first time since she was born. But I predict they’ll be here shortly. Jase and Allison won’t be able to stay away from her too long.”

“I can understand that,” Dane said, his voice husky as he continued to look at Elizabeth.

“Did you enjoy your afternoon off?” Maria asked, too curious not to ask.

“I went into Albuquerque and roamed the older section. I stopped in at the shop where your pots are displayed.”

“How did you know which one it was?”

“Your mother mentioned it. I even bought one.”

“Which one?”

“Come see,” he said with a grin.

Standing, Maria shifted Elizabeth to the crook of her arm and followed him into his apartment. This particular pot was large, about two feet high, and sat on the floor next to his bookshelves. There were some dried flowers in it.

“It looks good there,” Maria commented.

“The owner of the shop had it arranged like that and I wanted it as it was.”

Maria knew this particular pot commanded a hefty sum, and she wondered why Dane had bought it. Did he just want a piece of her work? “I would have made you a pot, you know. You didn’t have to buy one.”

He shrugged. “I saw it, and I wanted it.”

At the little-boy look on his face, she laughed. “Is that how you usually make your purchases?”

“Not only my purchases,” he said, more seriously now. “I used to go after life that way, too.”

“You will again,” she said softly, knowing it was so. With everything that had happened to him, Dane might feel as if fate were controlling his destiny. But a man like him didn’t let that happen for long. Choosing to move to Red Bluff proved it.
